HIIT workouts involve short, intense bursts of any aerobic exercise. Whether you want to squeeze in a workout during your lunch break or just can’t mentally get yourself to be in the gym any longer than 30 minutes, a HIIT workout is one of the most efficient ways to get your exercise in and your heart rate up. Research has shown that you can achieve more progress in 15 minutes of interval training than you can jogging on a treadmill for an hour. The average HIIT workout is around 30 minutes but there are types of HIIT workouts that take as little as four minutes. At the Y, we know you have a busy lifestyle with kids, work and other activities, making going to the gym for two hours impossible. HIIT workouts are the ideal type of exercise for a busy schedule. Read on to find the top five benefits of HIIT workouts. But that’s not the only reason why HIIT is so popular. If you want to work out and lose weight efficiently, try HIIT exercises. She shares all of this on her running Instagram account which she uses for accountability and for connecting with like-minded fitness lovers. You may have heard about HIIT workouts before but what exactly does that mean and why are so many people talking about it? High-intensity interval training (HIIT) describes a workout that alternates between intense bursts of activity and fixed periods of less-intense activity or short-term rest. Jessica also enjoys building on her strength in the gym and is a believer in health and wellness beginning in the kitchen. It is advised that health precautions must be taken before working out using HIIT.Ī lighter form of exercise such as brisk walking on one of the best treadmills on the market right now is another suitable way for older adults to improve their cardiovascular health. It's useful to note that participants across the various studies mentioned in this paper were not non-clinical populations so these results are not necessarily translatable to all elderly adults. The researchers concluded, "As the global population continues to age, early research on the impact of aerobic HIIT in older adults suggests that this training method (HIIT) is generally well-tolerated, feasible, and may confer many health advantages to this population." The scoping review was published in the Sports Medicine journal and found from cross-examining 69 studies, that featured findings on high-intensity interval training and older adults, that HIIT is a favorable form of aerobic exercise for older adults to perform. While much research has been done into the health benefits of HIIT for young and middle-aged adults, the recent 2021 study (opens in new tab) that we referred to above looked into HIIT exercise for older adults and the results are promising. You'll take a 30-second active rest between each exercise that requires you to walk on the spot as you bring the heart rate back down before the next move. Then, level three aims to get the heart pumping by adding something like a small hop, making the exercise more dynamic. Level two will increase the difficulty of the move by adding in another part of the body perhaps. Level one will keep things nice and steady. The reason this routine includes three levels to each exercise is to help increase the cardiovascular and strength results of the HIIT workout. For the first time in the series, naval exploration is a major part of an Assassin's Creed game, where Edward captains the Jackdaw, a brig he captures from a Spanish fleet in an early game mission. Players have the option to harpoon large sea animals and hunt land animals. The game's setting spans the West Indies with the three main cities of Havana, Nassau, and Kingston, along with numerous islands, sunken ships, and forts. Multiplayer also returns, albeit with only land-based modes and settings. Unlike previous games, gameplay elements focus more on the ship-based exploration of the seamless open world map, while also retaining the series' third-person land-based exploration, melee combat, and stealth system. A major plot element concerns the attempted establishment of an independent Pirate republic in the Caribbean. The main story is set in the West Indies during the Golden Age of Piracy from 1715 to 1722, and follows notorious Welsh pirate Edward Kenway, grandfather of Assassin's Creed III protagonist Ratonhnhaké:ton / Connor and father of antagonist Haytham Kenway, as he searches for fortune and a mythical location called the Observatory, which is sought by both the Assassins and the Templars. The framing story is set in the 21st century and depicts the player as an employee of Abstergo Industries (a company used as a front by the modern-day Templars), who is manipulated into uncovering secrets related to the Assassin-Templar conflict and the precursor race known as the First Civilization. The plot is set in a fictional history of real-world events and follows the millennia-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight to preserve peace and free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The game was released for Google Stadia in September 2021. It was later ported to the Nintendo Switch as part of The Rebel Collection alongside Assassin's Creed Rogue in December 2019. Black Flag was originally released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U in October 2013 and a month later for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. Its historical timeframe precedes that of Assassin's Creed III (2012), but its modern-day sequences succeed III 's own. It is the sixth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is a 2013 action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. Pinch-hitter Kaila Pollard followed up with a line drive single to left and pinch-hitter Sam Roe doubled to right field with two outs to threaten Kentucky's lead. Emily Wilkie led off the frame with a scorched groundball down the third-base line, but Lorsung made a diving stab at the bag and threw to Meeko Harrison at first for the initial out. The Wildcats finally were able to bypass the Gators defense as Grace Lorsung gave UK a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 6 th inning with a one-out solo home run.įlorida made a valiant attempt to rally in the top of the 7 th inning and put the tying run at third and the winning run at second. native and UF's fielding only allowed the Wildcats to reach scoring position twice over that span and were able to produce highlight worthy defensive plays by Charla Echols, Skylar Wallace and Kendra Falby. Hightower and Florida stifled Kentucky's offense and left them scoreless for the first five innings of play. The Orange & Blue tallied four hits, two doubles, while Kentucky earned five, which include one extra-base hit that proved to be the difference in the game. The Gators (35-19, 11-13 SEC) and the Wildcats (30-19-1, 10-14 SEC) squared-off in the second pitcher's duel of the weekend as UF right-handed starter Elizabeth Hightower (15-12) and UK's Alexia Lacatena (11-7) battled for a pair of complete-game performances. 23 Kentucky, 1-0, in the series finale at John Cropp Stadium on a cloudy Sunday afternoon. – The 16 th-ranked Florida softball team fell to No. The characters are amazing, the story is a modern day fairy tale gone array and the songs pull you back to "I remember when". I have DVR'd all of the episodes and I watch them in eager anticipation for the new ones. This is one of the most amazing shows I have ever seen. This show isn't about the cheerleaders, the prom queens or the popular girls. Here's to the first "chick show" in forever that is aimed at the ones hanging on the fringe. Not sure where the writers are going with the story or how they intend to wrap up what her time travel journey has done for her, but I'm really enjoying how Becca's choices keep changing things from her past, even in the smallest of ways. It's the first new show in a long time that I've actually been interested in. Overall, i hope Hindsight will run for a while. I don't love the choice of actress for the main character Becca (her face isn't very expressive) but I get why she was chosen: her looks and the fact that her age is hard to pinpoint which makes it easier for the audience to accept her as both a 40 year old and a woman in her early 20s. Despite the bad reviews, I actually think this show is cleverly written, entertaining and seems to get better with every episode. There is also some other great humor as well, especially with characters Lolly and Jamie. Since this show is about going back in time, there is of course lots of humor surrounding all that has changed so much in the last 20 years, like cell phones and the internet. The 90s flashback music, clothing, pop culture references, and even the attitudes of that era make this show rich with nostalgia and lots of fun. Because the longer you tell the story, the more clear it will become that your story was insufficient.Definitely a fun show for those of us who were teens or young adults during the 90s. But resist telling those stories again and again. It’s what we do at home, at work, and in our society. It’s natural to look back at what happened and to look for a logical explanation. Where ever you are, be careful about hindsight bias. Is it wrong that I would expect more courage from people who have declared themselves “life coaches”? But it seems that the most popular life coaches on social media spend 50% of their time explaining what happened in the past, 25% of their time sharing a soft “key to life,” and the remaining 25% of their time selling their service or book. Life coaches? It’s a new profession, and I’m still not sure what they do or how this works. If you expose your financial track record to a financial planner, he’ll tell you all the things that you did right and wrong. Hindsight bias, somehow, seems to be woven deeply into the fabric of many professions. These are two models that are informed by the past, tested in the present, and then boldly suggest what will happen next. I guess that’s why I geek out on Gartner’s Hype Cycle and Crossing the Chasm. It leaves you vulnerable because you might be wrong. Ironically, I’ve found very few of these authors who have the courage to predict the future–this takes too much nerve. Their hope is that their storytelling will be so compelling that you’ll agree with anything else they write. These writers look back at winners and losers in the business world, and then they string together theories to explain why it happened. Surprisingly, many business authors and bloggers fall victim to hindsight bias. If you pick through the facts of any situation, you can draw almost any conclusion. Yet they find evidence to support the outcome. The only thing that changed was a gust of wind. But if the wind would have blown the football outside of the goalposts and their team lost by a point, they would have been forced to explain the many reasons why their team lost. If their football team wins, they can tell you a long list of reasons why their team won the game. However rewarding it is to hear these stories on the shows, they were rife with what psychologists call hindsight bias: Hindsight bias is the inclination, after an event has occurred, to see the event as having been predictable, despite there having been little or no objective basis for predicting it.Īnother way to say it: it’s easy to make sense of things that have already happened. In the 1990s, Saved by the Bell made everyone want acid washed jeans. In the 1980s, Run DMC kicked off a suburban rap music revolution. In the 1970s, polyester was introduced to fashion, and cotton wasn’t seen again for years. In the 1960s, The Beatles had shaggy hair, and then no young person on the planet got a haircut for a decade. One of the trademarks of the show was celebrities talking about why and how trends caught on during each decade. We’ve heard these stories before: I Love 1990: Kelly Kapowski and Saved by the Bell. The Bod Pod is one of the most accurate body composition tests available today. There's no discomfort associated with the test - some people report it feeling like being in an elevator or a plane that has just taken off - although you will need to sit still. This option involves sitting inside an egg-shaped compartment for five minutes or less as instruments measure how much air your body displaces. Bod Pod (Air Displacement Plethysmography) Skulpt also offers a more-stripped down device, the Chisel, that also reads body fat percentage and muscle quality and that at the time of this writing is retailing for $99. Although it can be shared with family members, friends or clients. It is relatively expensive though - the device costs $149. The Skulpt Aim claims to be three times more accurate than skin-fold calipers and five times more accurate than bio-impedance. It is also designed to be placed on specific muscles throughout the body, giving a detailed picture of the strength of each muscle groups and gathers specific fat readings from multiple parts of your body. It uses a different current than BIA that is optimized to flow through fat as well as provide feedback about the quality of your muscles. This method is similar to BIA in that it uses electricity to determine certain qualities of your body tissue.Īn EIM device, such as the Skulpt Aim, is a hand-held gadget about the size of a cell phone that you hold on a few different sites on your body. Devices using this technology only recently came to market although they have been tested in hospitals for over a decade. More Advanced Tools Skulpt or Electrical Impedance Myography (EIM)ĮIM, which was developed by a professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School, is a relatively new technology. Even though the number might not be accurate it will accurately measure your body fat day-to-day variability, which is a far more reliable monitor than your body weight. Although the absolute value may be off a bit, a BIA scale is very accurate and typically very consistent. This measurement, along with other factors - such as your height, weight, age and sex that you enter into the device - is then used to calculate your percentage of body fat, lean body mass and other body composition measurements. BIA sends an electrical signal through your body, where it will pass easily through lean body mass - which is up to 75% water, a good conductor of electricity - but be impeded by your fat tissue - which contains low amounts of water. This approach can be as simple as stepping on a specific type of scale that measures body fat, readily available online for about $50. You'll also need to either perform some simple calculations on your own, or use an online calculator developed for just this purpose to translate those measurements into your body fat percentage. For results to be truly helpful, it's best to engage the help of another person - particularly for women, who need to measure the skinfold on the back of the upper arm, a difficult-to-reach area - and to use that same person to take your measurements each time. Although there is always the possibility of error, body fat calipers are one of the most time-tested and accurate ways to measure body fat. Taken at specific locations on your body, caliper readings can help you determine the total percent of body fat. They can easily be purchased on Amazon and come with comprehensive instructions and formulas that will calculate your body fat percentage. They can measure distance down to a millimeter. Calipers cost anywhere between a couple dollars and a couple hundred dollars and resemble a small pair of tongs. This low-tech method involves using an inexpensive, lightweight and hand-held device known as a skin caliper to measure the thickness of a fold of your skin and the fat that lies beneath it. This of course isn't the most accurate method, as it requires you to be objective about your appearance, but it can give you a very good idea of where you are and what the next stage in personal health actually looks like. You can use the photos below or do an Internet search for "body fat percentage" and selecting the Images tab on the results page. The easiest and least expensive way to gauge your body fat percentage is to take a photo of yourself in your underwear (the most painful part) and then compare it to photos of people at different body fat percentages. We've listed them below in order of cost, complexity and accuracy, from lowest to highest: Photo Approximation There are several ways to determine how much body fat you are carrying. You can add your body fat percentage to your diary by adding a biometric on the website or in the mobile app. It is strongly recommended that you use the most accurate method described below that is available to you. Knowing your body fat percentage will help us to provide you with a more accurate recommendation for your daily protein requirements.
